Hug it out. Or don’t

I was at a business lunch the other day, and as it was winding down and goodbyes were being said, I got my first taste of the hottest new trend in business. The work-place hug.

I’ve had what some would call a “bromance” with hugging my male friends, dating all the way back to my days of middle school basketball. I don’t really see anything wrong with embracing those closest to you. There has, however, always been a gap between friendship and business that the hug just couldn’t cross. Until now.

Time has an interesting article about the phenomenon asking “Are Hugs the New Handshakes?” In some ways it makes a lot of sense to start passing out the hugs. What better way to say “we’re all  in this together?” Or what better way to end a heated discussion than to “hug it out.” People all over Europe and the Middle East greet each other with hugs, or kisses on the cheek, so it doesn’t seem like too big of a leap for us Americans.

Until hugging becomes the norm, though, we will still be faced with the awkward hug-or-no-hug moments in our lives. You best bet is to default to the handshake, at least until the work-place Macarena becomes standard.
