Manage Your Personal Brand

Now more than ever, it is important to think about the public face that we are projecting. Either on the Internet, or in real life. No matter what field you are planning on entering, whether it be business, medicine or even Parks and Recreation, I think everyone should take a marketing class, or do some reading about marketing in the 21st Century.

We all have a public image, easily found by a quick Google search that future employers, graduate schools or even potential dates can find.

Seth Godin wrote a really good article about what can happen if you manage your personal brand properly.. or poorly.A properly managed personal brand can bring you great opportunities both personally and professionally. It is a good idea to periodically Google yourself (come on, you know you do it already), and make sure that there isn’t anything out there that could be seen as objectionable. Then, you can make updates to profiles and pictures to highlight all of the great things you do.

A poorly managed brand does just the opposite– it limits your opportunities and allows the spread of false or inaccurate information about you.

Seth Godin has a great blog with lots of ideas on maximizing your personal brand, and there are lots of great Web sites and books about the same thing. Starting a blog, or firing up your Twitter account is a great way to start getting your name out there.
